How Is Hash Made?

The Trichome: Where Every Gram Starts
Trichomes are the microscopic resin glands that frost a mature cannabis flower — tiny mushroom-shaped stalks whose heads hold most of the plant's cannabinoids and terpenes. A gram of good hash is millions of these heads, harvested one way or another. Every method below is just a different answer to the question: how do you get the heads off the plant without ruining them?
The Four Ways Hash Gets Made
1. Hand-rubbing (charas). The oldest method: live, flowering plants are rubbed gently between the palms and the sticky resin that accumulates is rolled into balls or sticks. Practised across the Himalayan foothills for centuries. Labour-intensive, low-yield, and the origin of the temple-ball tradition — dense, glossy, deeply aromatic.
2. Dry-sieving (Moroccan and Lebanese styles). Dried, cured plants are shaken and rubbed over progressively finer silk screens; the resin falls through as powder, which is then pressed — often with gentle warmth — into bars and slabs. Aging before or after pressing rounds the flavour: it's why Lebanese hash goes red-gold and mellow. This is also exactly how modern dry sift is made — the tradition never left, it just got cleaner screens.
3. Ice-water extraction (bubble hash). The modern Canadian signature: fresh-frozen cannabis is stirred in ice water so the cold-brittled trichome heads snap off, wash through micron-graded filter bags, and get freeze-dried. 4. Pressing and curing (where styles are born). The same collected resin becomes different hash depending on the finish: heat-pressed into Afghani-style bars, hand-worked into temple balls, or — the newest chapter — top-grade bubble hash sealed and cold-cured into piatella, the creamy, terpene-saturated format that's taken over the premium end of the market.
