Fresh-frozen (or carefully dried) cannabis goes into ice water and gets gently agitated. The cold makes trichome heads brittle; they break off and wash through a stack of mesh bags graded in microns — typically 45–159μ — with the best food-grade resin collecting in the 73–120μ range. The wet resin is then freeze-dried. The result ranges from sandy powder to greasy, terpy granules, and the top washes — the ones that melt clean over heat — earn the “full-melt” grade. Cold-cured, that same material becomes piatella.
Dried, cured cannabis is worked over progressively finer silk screens — no water, no ice, no solvents, just friction, patience and gravity. First-pass sift includes more plant material; refined “static-tech” sift, cleaned again with static electricity, can rival bubble hash for purity. Sift can be enjoyed loose (as kief), lightly pressed into bars, or heat-pressed into traditional Moroccan-style hash.

Grade for grade, bubble hash usually tests higher — ice-water washing captures intact, ripe trichome heads with very little plant material, and full-melt grades approach extract-level potency. But refined dry sift is no slouch: a clean static-tech sift will outperform a mediocre wash every time. The honest rule: the refinement matters more than the method.
Different, not better. Bubble hash from fresh-frozen material is the closest thing to smelling the living plant — vivid, loud, strain-specific. Dry sift tastes like hash in the classic sense: warm, earthy, slightly sweet, especially once pressed and rested. If you love terpenes, wash wins. If you love tradition, sift wins.

Is bubble hash better than dry sift?
Neither is objectively better — bubble hash is fresher and louder, dry sift is warmer and more traditional. Refinement level matters more than method.
Is kief the same as dry sift?
Kief is unrefined first-pass sift — what collects in your grinder. Proper dry sift is screened and cleaned multiple times for much higher purity.
What do the microns mean on bubble hash?
The mesh size of the filter bag the resin was caught in. The 73–120μ range typically holds the cleanest, meltiest heads.
Can you dab dry sift?
Only very refined sift melts well enough to dab. Full-melt bubble hash is the safer choice for a rig.
Does bubble hash need to be refrigerated?
For longer storage, yes — keep it cold and airtight to protect the terpenes. Pressed sift is more forgiving at room temperature.
